Why people using telecare devices should not worry about the analogue switchover

There are over two million people using vital alarms such as telecare alarms or personal alarms to call for help, and their safety is paramount.

Most telecare equipment, medical pendants and alarms are compatible with the new digital technology network.

Companies including Openreach and Community Fibre, who own and maintain Staffordshire’s internet and phone infrastructure, have now agreed new measures to protect our communities’ more vulnerable people (such as those using telecare technology) during the switchover to the new digital network.

These agreements include:

1) No one will be left without a working device during the switchover – they will make sure that customers’ buttons continue to work or functioning alternatives are put in place before the agreed switchover day. As the customer you will have to agree that the solution is working for you.

2) Your telecare providers will have at least 12 months notice about the switchover and should be in touch with you. However, it’s a good idea to contact your telecare provider well ahead of your switchover day to check the compatibility of any equipment you use.

The agreement also means the more vulnerable people will have better access to emergency services during power cuts/outages.

Don’t worry – the telephone industry has been planning for the switchover for some time.  This might even be an opportunity for an upgrade!
